Storage of renewable energy 

Energy storage is crucial for future energy systems. In addition to existing energy storage in salt caverns, such as natural gas, the growth of solar and wind energy requires greater flexibility to balance supply and demand. Salt caverns are a proven solution for this and enable hydrogen networks. As such, they play a key role in a stable and well-functioning of a hydrogen backbone. The energy transition accelerates the need for renewable energy storage, Nobian holds a unique and strong position in Northern Europe to support the transition to a hydrogen economy through the development of energy storage caverns.  

Energy storage in salt caverns 

Salt caverns offer an effective underground storage solution, both technically and economically, with proven feasibility. They help maintain security of supply and fluctuations in supply and demand. Furthermore, the storage of green and low-carbon energy in onshore salt caverns can help reduce dependence on foreign countries for our energy supplies, strengthen strategic autonomy, and support a more sustainable industry. 

Smart use of renewable energy sources

In the future, different forms of energy storage will be needed to make optimal use of renewable energy. These include long-term storage of gas and hydrogen, short-term storage in batteries, and medium-term storage, such as compressed air. Hydrogen storage is becoming increasingly important, partly to make better use of wind energy and partly for use as a feedstock in industrial processes.  

Energy storage projects

Nobian is involved in the development of large-scale energy storage in salt caverns, with completed projects as well as ongoing and future initiatives. In Zuidwending, the Netherlands, we have already developed several caverns for natural gas storage for storage operator EnergyStock (Gasunie). Together with EnergyStock, Nobian is currently preparing the potential development of similar caverns for hydrogen storage as part of the Hystock project. 

In Denmark, Nobian and Gas Storage Denmark have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore potential cooperation in the development of energy storage caverns in Denmark.
