Battery chemicals

Powering Europe’s energy transition

Batteries are at the heart of Europe’s energy transition. They enable electric mobility, industrial electrification, large-scale energy storage, and grid stability. The production of batteries requires high quality and essential chemicals. To ensure and improve a battery’s performance, safety, lifetime, and sustainability, the right chemistry matters.

Nobian develops and produces high-purity, battery-grade chemicals, scaling innovation from laboratory development to large-scale industrial manufacturing. By operating close to our customers and markets, we ensure our solutions meet the demands of real-world, high-volume applications.

From innovation to industrial production

With deep expertise in salt, salt chemisty, electrochemistry, and crystallization, combined with a well-established chlor-alkali infrastructure and production base across Western Europe, we bridge the gap between concept and industrial deployment.

We are committed to building a reliable, European supply of battery-grade chemicals, from early-stage development through commercialization. Our approach focuses on safe, sustainable production at scale, applying our electrolysis capabilities to support battery manufacturers and energy storage innovators across the value chain.

 Enabling battery value chains

Nobian operates at the start of the battery value chain, developing and supplying critical salt and chlor-alkali‑based battery-grade chemicals through advanced, patented processes.

We particularly focus on two complementary technologies:

  • Lithium-ion batteries: Which power electric vehicles or smart devices, for example, and the use of which is rapidly expanding in energy storage applications.
  • Sodium-based batteries: Increasingly important for large-scale stationary energy storage and grid support.

By advancing both pathways, we help build a secure, competitive, and low-carbon battery materials base in Europe. This strenghtens strategic value chains, reduces reliance on environmentally or geopolitically sensitive resources, and supports Europe’s long-term energy security and resilience – fully aligned with our Grow Greener Together strategy.

Lithium refining

Lithium-ion batteries are central to the electrification of transport, and the use is rapidly expanding in energy storage. Securing access to high-purity lithium chemicals is therefore a strategic priority for Europe, as reflected in initiatives such as the Critical Raw Materials Act.

Nobian has developed a patented, low‑carbon process to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM), a key cathode material. Our technology directly converts lithium chloride (LiCl) into battery-grade LHM using electrolysis and crystallization.

Built on proven chlor‑alkali technology and validated at pilot scale, this process offers lower energy consumption, reduced waste streams, and improved cost efficiency compared with conventional refining methods.

We are advancing this technology towards industrial scale-up, working with lithium chloride suppliers and exploring the integration of both primary and recycled lithium streams to support circularity.

Sodium-based electrolyte for molten-salt batteries

While lithium-ion batteries mainly power mobility, costs, supply risks, and safety considerations are driving demand for alternatives in stationary energy storage. Sodium-based molten-salt batteries offer a safe, reliable solution if key materials are available at scale.

Nobian is addressing this need by expanding the production of battery-grade sodium tetrachloroaluminate (NaAlCl₄, STCA), a critical electrolyte for molten-salt batteries. Our patented, highly efficient, one-step process builds on our strengths, supply chain and electrolysis capabilities. Using in‑house salt - one of Europe’s essential raw materials, together with chlorine, we are scaling production through pilot projects and partnerships. This supports safer, cost-effective, and low-carbon sodium battery value chains in Europe.

Collaboration and scale‑up

Scaling breakthrough chemistry into industrial products requires endurance and strong partnerships. Nobian, therefore, collaborates with battery developers, suppliers, off takers, recyclers, technology partners, and research institutes to accelerate deployment. We are convinced that this is how we will Grow Greener Together. By combining our expertise in chemicals, process and electrolysis, with high safety standards and the capabilities of our partners, we enable the transition from laboratory validation and pilot validaton to commercial-scale battery-grade chemical production.

Our collaborations include leading European initiatives such as:

  • SLDBatt consortium consortium (part of Dutch Growth Fund / Groeifonds)
  • STARBATCH (focused on NaAlCl₄ development)
  • LiSA pilot consortium (lithium innovation).

These partnerships connect innovation, infrastructure, and market demand to strengthen Europe’s battery ecosystem.

Building a European battery chemicals platform

Nobian is developing a battery chemicals business with a clear path to market. Across both lithium-ion and sodium-based technologies, we:

  • Advance patented production technologies through pilot programs and partner programs
  • De-risk industrial scale-up
  • Validate product specifications with customers
  • Prepare for full-scale industrial deployment in Europe

Looking ahead, our ambition is to enhance collaboration across the value chain and share progress through focused delivery, demonstrating how our chemistry enables scalable, reliable, and sustainable supply of battery-grade chemicals.
