22 August 2022

As a European leader in salt, essential chemicals, and energy, Nobian has been awarded a platinum medal by EcoVadis for its sustainability performance. It is the first time that Nobian has submitted for an Ecovadis rating.

EcoVadis is the world’s most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings. More than 90.000 companies globally have been rated by EcoVadis. The platinum medal places the company in the top 1% of ranked companies globally.

Very strong scores across all assessed criteria

Driven by its ambitious “Grow Greener Together” program, Nobian is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2040, with 100% renewable energy. Nobian achieved a very strong score in all criteria assessed by EcoVadis across four core themes: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement.

Michael Koenig, Chief Executive Officer: “The platinum rating validates and demonstrates our strong commitment to sustainability and supports our mission to “Grow Greener Together” with our partners. This is a fantastic achievement and part of our journey to becoming one of the most sustainable chemical companies in Europe.” He emphasized: “Moving forward, we are focused on making our business even more sustainable. This also includes a strong focus on seizing business opportunities in sustainability. For example, the underground storage of hydrogen or the production of lithium hydroxide for batteries.”

Marco Waas, VP R&D and Technology and Sustainability: “We are very proud that our sustainability governance and performance have been recognized by EcoVadis with this platinum rating. Especially since this was our first submission as a stand-alone company. This score shows that we have a strong fundament of policies, actions and results to reach our ambitious sustainability goals towards 2030 and 2040”. Waas added: “This achievement is an acknowledgement that sustainability is in our hearts and minds as well as in our actions.”

Grow Greener Together

Nobian’s sustainability approach “Grow Greener Together” is based on the three pillars Climate, Circular and Care. Having already reduced its carbon footprint by 40% since 1990, the company is now stepping up its efforts, striving to become one of the most sustainable chemical companies in Europe. To support reaching this goal, Nobian has set itself the strong and demanding target of becoming carbon neutral by 2040, ahead of the Paris agreement, with 100% renewable energy.

Evidence-based reporting
Nobian is committed to continuously monitoring and managing its own sustainability performance as well as that of its partners. To ensure evidence-based reporting and to push decarbonization transparently throughout its operations and value chain Nobian participated in the EcoVadis rating process. Additionally, Nobian is committed to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and has enrolled for CDP global disclosure system for environmental transparency and action.
