Nobian is proud to be part of an industry coalition, bringing together six industrial clusters and their partners, that today presented a bid book to a new Dutch cabinet. The bid book highlights the vital role of manufacturing and the chemical industry in building a strong, sustainable economy.
The bid book outlines a shared vision and concrete solutions to ensure the Netherlands remains competitive while working towards climate neutrality. It emphasizes the importance of industry as the foundation of our society, providing essential materials for sectors, such as healthcare, construction, high-tech, and defense. Together, the six major Dutch industrial clusters represent hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and a significant share of national economy, whilst being drivers for innovation and the energy transition.
The Netherlands has everything it needs to lead in sustainable industry: strong clusters, advanced knowledge, innovative technologies, and strategic access to ports and renewable energy. Plans stand ready for electrification, hydrogen production, chemical recycling, and circular value chains. However, urgent action is needed to overcome challenges in execution, for example high energy costs, slow permitting, and grid congestion. Without decisive measures, investments are stalling, and production could move abroad, threatening jobs, knowledge, and our strategic autonomy.
The industry coalition urges the government to create a level playing field with neighboring countries, accelerate infrastructure development for electricity, lower electricity costs, develop hydrogen production and storage, and CO₂ capture, and foster demand for sustainable products. By working together, we can turn the Netherlands into a green energy and industrial production hub for Northwest Europe.
Jorn van der Meer, Director Public Affairs and Communications at Nobian: “This initiative reflects our commitment to building a strong and sustainable industrial base in the Netherlands. At Nobian, we have a clear target to reach near zero-emissions by 2040, using 100% renewable energy. Our activities in salt extraction, essential chemicals, and energy storage support the Dutch strategic position as a hub for renewable energy, indispensable raw materials, and advanced chemical production. Intensive collaboration between industry and government is crucial to accelerate the energy transition and to maintain the competitiveness of the Dutch industry. That is how we can Grow Greener Together.”
Nobian plays a key role in supplying essential products and driving innovation for a climate-neutral future. Our site in Delfzijl, in the Northern Netherlands industrial cluster, responsible for about 15% of the country’s basic chemical production, supplies essential products to sectors such as water treatment, agriculture, and high-tech manufacturing. In addition, Nobian’s Rotterdam site is part of the Rotterdam-Moerdijk cluster, home to one of Europe’s largest chlor-alkali plants and a pioneering green hydrogen facility certified under the EU’s RFNBO standard. With a 140 MW electrolysis capacity, this plant produces renewable hydrogen using green electricity, supporting the decarbonization of heavy industry and mobility. Through these sites, Nobian supports the energy transition and strengthens the Netherlands’ position as a hub for sustainable industry.
