Nobian strengthens green hydrogen portfolio with RFNBO certification in Frankfurt

08 April 2026
  • With the certification of the green hydrogen produced at its Frankfurt site, Nobian has taken another step towards creating a robust and reliable Renewable Fuels of Non‑Biological Origin (RFNBO) portfolio.
  • This achievement builds on a year of strong progress in developing its low-carbon product portfolio.
  • In 2025, Nobian became the first European chemical company to offer a full portfolio of ISCC PLUS certified chloromethanes, following the earlier certification of green hydrogen in Rotterdam, and with Frankfurt now being added to the network.
Expanding a trusted supply of certified, traceable green molecules

For Nobian, the RFNBO certification in Frankfurt is more than a regulatory milestone - it is the next step in a long‑term strategy to accelerate the transition to low‑carbon chemical production across Europe. At our Frankfurt site, up to 6,000 tons of green hydrogen per year will now be supplied from Nobian’s chlor‑alkali electrolysis process, powered entirely by renewable electricity.

Certified green hydrogen under ISCC EU RFNBO

Securing RFNBO certification means Nobian’s customers can depend on green hydrogen that meets the EU’s strictest sustainability and greenhouse‑gas reduction criteria. Under the ISCC EU framework, producers must demonstrate:

  • Full traceability of renewable electricity
  • Compliance with stringent emissions thresholds
  • Transparent documentation across the entire production chain

For customers, this translates into a trusted, regulation‑aligned solution to advance their own decarbonization pathways—whether in chemicals, mobility, or other energy‑intensive sectors.

Supporting customers and accelerating RFNBO markets

The certification of the Frankfurt site marks a significant expansion of Nobian’s renewable hydrogen portfolio. It strengthens the company’s ability to support customers in meeting the EU’s 2030 decarbonization targets, which call for a rapidly increasing share of renewable hydrogen across industry and transport.

But the impact goes beyond Nobian’s own operations. By working closely with regional partners, we are bringing RFNBO hydrogen from Frankfurt to the market, creating the foundations for a broader hydrogen ecosystem in Germany and across Europe. This momentum—building on the earlier RFNBO certification in Rotterdam—positions Nobian as an enabler of Europe’s shift toward sustainable, low‑carbon value chains.

“By certifying our Frankfurt site, we further strengthen our low-carbon product portfolio with RFNBO certified products. This supports our customers to lower their carbon footprint and helps to develop a sustainable hydrogen economy,” said Markus Mingenbach, Senior Vice President Chlor-Alkali & Chloromethanes at Nobian. “This certification underscores Nobian’s commitment to providing low-carbon hydrogen solutions across our network and reflects how we put our Grow Greener Together ambition into practice every day.

Julien Courtois, Senior Product & Business Development Manager Hydrogen at Nobian emphasized, “Adding the Frankfurt production site to our RFNBO offering solidifies Nobian’s leadership as Europe’s largest producer of certified green hydrogen.

Looking ahead

Nobian will continue to collaborate with industry partners, policy makers, and regulators to further expand its low-carbon product RFNBO-portfolio. With certified production now both in the Netherlands and Germany, the company is contributing to Europe's long‑term transition toward climate‑neutral industrial system.
