  • Nobian launches its ambitious sustainability program “Grow Greener Together”, to become carbon neutral by 2040, with 100% renewable energy
  • Approach, targets and KPI’s are presented in Nobian’s First Annual Sustainability Report, which also highlights its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives
  • Nobian strives to be “one of the most sustainable chemical companies in Europe”

Nobian, a European market leader in the production of salt, essential chemicals, and energy for industry, announced today its first sustainability approach as an independent company after its separation from Nouryon: “Grow Greener Together”. Having already reduced its carbon footprint with 40% since 1990, the company is now stepping up its actions, to become one of the most sustainability companies in Europe. To support reaching this goal, Nobian has set a strong target of becoming carbon neutral by 2040, ahead of the Paris agreement, with 100% renewable energy.

The “Grow Greener Together” program is built around three pillars: Climate, Circular and Care. Apart from reducing carbon emissions and increasing renewable energy, sustainability targets include, amongst others, energy storage, green certification of products, such as hydrogen, recycling, safety and community action. Nobian has published its inaugural annual sustainability report together with the presentation of the “Grow Greener Together” program. Progress will be reported annually.

To ensure evidence-based reporting and to push decarbonization transparently through its operations and value chain, Nobian is committing to Science-Based Targets and will be joining the Carbon-Disclosure Project (CDP) later this year. Nobian is participating in the EcoVadis rating process to assess its sustainability performance and has identified climate-related risks and opportunities following the Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) framework.

“We are very proud to present our sustainability approach. Since 1990 we have already reduced our carbon footprint with 40%, but we need to step up.”, Nobian CEO Michael Koenig said. “We strive to become one of the most sustainable chemicals companies in Europe, but this is not something we can do alone. That’s why we want to “Grow Greener Together” with our customers, partners and society.” We are very focused on leveraging our competencies in salt and electrochemistry to drive green growth in impactful markets, such as energy storage and hydrogen, turning sustainability challenges into business opportunities.”, Koenig added.

Nobian’s VP R&D, Technology and Sustainability, Marco Waas, said: “To reach our target of zero emissions by 2040, we have already taken steps to reduce emissions and energy usage in our operations by 35.5%, with a strong portfolio of projects and innovations to take this further. By leveraging our more than 100 years of experience we provide essential chemicals that society cannot do without, and which are needed for the energy transition, such as insulation, different type of batteries, light weighting and base materials to produce windmills and low carbon concrete.” Waas also emphasized the importance and commitment to “engage proactively and meaningfully with our people and communities.”

After having launched new company values earlier this year – Care, Excellence, Ownership and Safety - the launch of the “Grow Greener Together” program is a next and important step for Nobian as an independent company. To underline its commitment to delivering on its climate ambition ahead of the Paris-agreement, and to be an industry leader on sustainability, Nobian’s sustainability targets form an integral part of the company’s financing framework.
